Union Fire Company Historian, Randy Watts, has recently published an exciting book for all history enthusiasts! Read the below book review by Deputy Fire Chief Billy Goldfeder!!
"Three centuries of service? THREE CENTURIES! Try to find any organization in 2013, that has lasted THREE CENTURIES. Absolutely unheard of!
The Union Fire Company of Carlisle (PA) has been serving since 1789. Through fires, wars, emergencies, rescues, battles, internal conflicts, political trauma, challenges and change, change, change, "THE UNION" has persevered through it all. Actually, while the company is called THE UNION, it is really the people who are "THE UNION", people who together have understood (since 1789!) and continue to understand that in UNION, there is strength. Staying focused on the mission of taking care of their community-and taking care of each other-the members who serve, is their very strong, "secret" ingredient. In this day and age where no fire company is exempt from consolidations, mergers, reductions and elimination, this amazing book will definitely be wonderfully different things to different people.
...is going to be a source of PRIDE, to anyone who lives or has lived, worked or visited Carlisle PA. You will be amazed at how much has changed-and not changed
...is one of the most comprehensive fire service histories that has ever been written. Anyone who is or has been a firefighter anywhere will relate to the photos and stories throughout this book. You don't need to be a Union Fire Company member to appreciate it-you will recognize so many of the firefighters and others as characters that you have crawled hallways with, in your own organization
...is a wonderful, fact filled, photo packed "survival guide" for any fire company on how to thrive...genuinely thrive and create a pride filled, professional organization where the community NEEDS their fire company to last...for centuries.
Several years ago, I was honored with membership in the Union Fire Company No. 1. I have kept that card in my wallet since that day. I recently showed it to someone who asked me...why? My response was simple: we are judged by the company we keep. While I am certainly proud to be a part of THE UNION, the community of Carlisle can be justifiably proud of the fire company THEY keep. Their Union Fire Company No. 1.
